Maya/Sal. Yes. Maya most useful for healing, Krieg built for UVHM, Axton and Sal are definitely for solo, and if you spice it up, Zer0 and Gaige.. All of them are fine to play single player. It depends on how you want to play, but they're all good and can handle all content. My personal preference is for Maya.

Everything Maya does is keyed off Phaselocking, and Quicken lets you do more of it. Reaper is Maya's most reliable damage booster. It's good for any build and is especially effective when combined with elemental DoTs. Every Maya build should include 5/5 Wreck. It's one of her most powerful DPS skills. I've never gotten to the high OP levels, but I don't think you could talk me out of using Cloud Kill.

Kinetic Reflection and Inertia are just very useful skills. It is amusing to see enemies kill themselves when KR is active and their own bullets reflect back to them. Inertia is just a useful shield skill. Class mods - Look for a Legendary Siren. It is just a very good mod for Maya.

if you are indeed new to the game. i would suggest playing Maya or Axton first, leave Salvador for last. Reinforcing what Draekus said, if you are new to the game, don't bother with builds at all until you hit the endgame. Just use whatever guns/skills that strike your fancy, the game is pretty forgiving until lv50.

The general gist is to maximise dps while still staying alive. Ruin, Reaper, Chain Reaction, Foresight, Accelerate, WRECK helps you kill stuff. For more dps, put points in Mind's Eye. Elated, Sustenance, Life Tap, Converge and SWEET RELEASE helps you stay alive. If you find sustenance does nothing for you, maybe Mind's Eye is a better choice.
